Book Club: A Moving Child is a Learning Child

I'm reading a wonderful book called "A Moving Child is a Learning Child" by Gill Connell and Cheryl McCarthy. This book was recommended by my friend and mentor, Jessica (founder of Intellidance); there are so many awesome nuggests I can't help but share! So this is the first of my book club series where I will be sharing little clips of insight on on movement and early childhood development.

Here goes:

The first #1 take-away from page 1 of this book is this the importance of movement in the early years.

"The brain is the body's first teacher" and in the first 5 years of life, they are unite as equal forces for creating the little humans we love.

Moving not only builds our physical capabilities but it also provides us with sensory perception which create pathways in our brains that allow us to reach our full potential.

By nature, the brain's top priority from birth is to gather information and this done only by movement and diverse sensory stimulation. Both repition AND new experiences play an important role in a little one's quest for information.

So what's the bottom line?

Our goal as educators and parents is essentially to help those brain pathways get built! You may get bored with a simple activity that your child is enthralled with such as sitting with a ball or playing peek-a-boo, but just think about all the productivity you are promoting in your child's little brain. You are a your child's personal learning agent!
